DONALD NORTHCROSS

Founder of the O.K. Program

Did you know that African American males are approximately 6% of the nation’s population while comprising approximately 50% of the nation’s prison population?  Although these statistics are alarming and unacceptable, people still ask me; “Why does the O.K. Program only target African American males?”  In most cases, that question is followed by this statement, “I feel that all young people need guidance and support.”

Well, nothing could be more truthful.  In fact, I agree one hundred percent; however, my response is that one will never find a single program that can be the answer to all of our problems.  With that in mind, I developed the O.K. Program to address a specific problem in our society.  One that has been ignored for many years…the high rates of incarceration and homicide of African American males.  I believe that whenever there is a specific problem, there need to be a specific solution to solve that problem.

While I believe that the entire nation should be concerned about the high rates of incarceration and homicide of African American males, I also believe that every responsible African American male should take a special interest in regard to this issue.  Responsible African American males should be willing to work tirelessly to address this critical national crisis.  However, I realize that in order to solve any problem it is important to understand the cause of the problem.  Although it is difficult to identify all of the contributing factors to the high rates of incarceration and homicide of African American males, many people often point to causes such as the break down in the family structure, poverty and racism.  All of these are certainly factors.  In addition, there is another significant factor that contributes to this epidemic—apathy.  Therefore, I feel strongly that if we are to reverse the grim statistics that African American males are facing, we must find a cure for this insidious apathy which, in too may instances, paralyzes us (as African Americans) and prohibits us from taking care of pressing needs in our own community.
